UNIT 10: OUR SUMMER HOLIDAYS
Lesson 2 (2 periods)
I. OBJECTIVES
1. Knowledge and skills
By the end of this lesson, pupils will be able to:
- Understand and correctly repeat the sentences in two communicative contexts focusing on asking and answering questions about where someone was in the past.
- Correctly say the words and use "Where were you last summer? – I was in ___." to ask and answer questions about where someone was in the past.
- Use the target structure to ask and answer questions about where someone was in the past in a freer context.
- Listen to and understand four communicative contexts about where someone was in the past and match the characters to the correct pictures.
- Complete two gapped exchanges with the help of picture cues.
- Review target words to make sentences about where someone was in the past by playing the game Making sentences.

2. PRESENTATION Activity 1: Look, listen and repeat. a. Objective: To understand and correctly repeat the sentences in two communicative contexts focusing on asking and answering questions about where someone was in the past. b. Organisation: - Have pupils look at Pictures a and b and identify the characters, places and activities.
- Ask pupils to look at Picture a. Play the recording from youtube for them to familiarise themselves with the characters' voices. Play the recording again, sentence by sentence, for pupils to listen and repeat. Repeat the same procedure with Picture b. Correct their pronunciation where necessary. - Play the recording again for pupils to listen and repeat in chorus sentence by sentence. - Invite a few pairs to the front of the classroom to listen and repeat the sentences in the recording. - Draw pupils' attention to the question Where were you last summer? and the answer I was in Tokyo. Tell pupils that they are the question and answer about where someone was in the past. - Teacher moves on to the next content. |
- Pupils look at the pictures and identify Context a (Nam and Mary talking about London) and Context b (Nam and Mary talking about Tokyo).
- Pupils listen to the recording to familiarise themselves with the voices, then listen and repeat sentence by sentence.
- Pupils pay attention to their pronunciation and read in chorus. - Pairs go to the front and role-play the exchanges.

Activity 3: Let's talk. a. Objective: To enhance the correct use of Where were you last summer? – I was in ___ to ask and answer questions about where someone was in the past in a freer context. b. Organisation: - Draw pupils' attention to the pictures. Ask questions to help them identify the context.
- Put pupils into pairs and encourage them to ask and answer questions about where someone was in the past. Go around the classroom to offer support where necessary. - Ask pupils to use a basic AI voice-check tool (eg., Native Speech,...) on a class tablet to verify their pronunciation. - Have pairs practise asking and answering questions about where someone was in the previous summer. Go around the classroom to observe and provide help. - Invite a few pairs to the front of the class to perform their conversations. Praise pupils if they perform well. - Teacher moves on to the next content. |
- Pupils look at the pictures and identify the cities. Picture cues: a picture of Bangkok; a picture of Tokyo; a picture of London; a picture of Sydney.
- Pupils work in pairs, taking turns asking and answering "Where were you last summer? – I was in..."
- Speak into the device to see if the AI recognizes the city name correctly.

Activity 5: Look, complete and read. a. Objective: To complete two gapped exchanges with the help of picture cues. b. Organisation: - Have pupils look at the pictures. Get them to identify the characters and the places in the pictures.
- Have pupils look at the two gapped exchanges. Draw their attention to the missing words in the questions and answers. - Model Exchange 1. Have pupils look at the first gap. Ask them what word is missing (London). Then have them complete the answer (I was in London.). Get them to guess the missing word in the second answer (Yes) and complete the answer (Yes, it is.). - Use a digital text-fill tool on the screen. Type the answers as pupils call them out. - Repeat the same procedure with Exchange 2. - Have pupils complete the gaps individually. Check their answers as a class and ask a few pairs to read them aloud. - Teacher moves on to the next content. |

3. PRACTICE a. Objective: To reinforce the core vocabulary and grammar structures learned in the lesson through exercises. b. Organisation: Mission 1: Rearrange. - Teacher distributes the exercise handouts or displays the task on the screen. - Teacher explains the requirement: "You need to put the given words in the correct order to make complete sentences." - Teacher lets pupils work individually to complete the 4 basic sentences. 1. you / Where / summer / last / were / ? > ___________________________ 2. in / I / Tokyo / was / . > ___________________________ 3. was / Sydney / in / He / . > ___________________________ 4.
