UNIT 8: SPORTS AND GAMES

LESSON 6: SKILLS 2 

I. OBJECTIVES.

1. Knowledge: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

- listen for specific information about sports and games.

- write about a sport or a game they like.

- PRACTICE listening and writing skills

2. Competences: listen for specific information, using language to write a paragraph about a sport/ a game they like; cooperation, self- study

3. Quality:  Ss are involed in the lesson and enjoy playing sports and games.

II. TEACHING AIDS.

T: laptop, bluetooth, textbook, English room

Ss: prepare the lesson, textbook

III. PROCEDURE

1. WARM UP:  Network (5’)

a. Goal: - ss call out names of the sports/ games they know

b. CONTENTS :  names of sports and games

c. Expected result:  swimming, table tennis, basket ball, volleball, skipping…

2. PRESENTATION (5’)- Pre –  Listening (7’)

a. Goal:  Ss listen to know who the passages are about

b. CONTENTS:  Listen and identify who are mentioned in the passage.

c. Expected result:  Ss listen to understand the passage is about Hai, Alice, 

d. Performance:

3.  PRACTICE -While – Listening (15’)

a. Goal:  Ss can listen for specific information for more intensive understanding

b. Contents :  Ss listen and decide the T/F statements; fill in the blanks to complete the sentences.

c. Expected result: Ss listen and do the tasks well.

CONTENTS

Task 2: Listen to the passages again. Then write True (T) or False (F) for each sentence.

Step 1: Transferring the learning task

-  T asks SS to read the sentences carefully and find the key words

- Play the recording again.Tell Ss that they have to tick T or F for each sentence 

Step 2: Performing the task

- Ss do the task

+ T plays the recording again. While Ss listen, they have to write down T or F.

Step 3: Discussion

-  Ss report back

Step 4: Conclusion

- T asks ss’ comments and gives them the answer key

Task 3: 

Step 1: Transfering the learning task

-  T gives the task, checks what they are going to do.

- T plays the recording the third time for Ss to fill the blanks.

Step 2: Performing the task

- Ss do the task

Step 3: Discussion

- Ss report

Ss can share their answers before listening to the recording a final time to check.

Step 4: Conclusion

- T asks Ss comment and gives them the results

4. PRODUCTION-  Writing (15’)

a. Goal: Help Ss to:

- practise asking and answering questions about their favorite sports and games and brainstorm ideas for their writing

- write a paragraph to tell about his/ her favourite game or sport.

b. Contents : Write about a sport/game you like. Use your own ideas and the following as cues. 

c. Expected result:  Ss’ writing must include the following information:

+ Name of the sport or game.

+ How many players are there?

+ How often do you play it

+ What equipment it need?

+ Why do you like?

d. Performance:

Ex 4: 

Step 1: Transferring the learning task

- T have Ss work in pairs and talk about the sport/game they like. They can use given or their own ideas … 

- Ask them to note down the important and interesting things inn their notebooks

Step 2: Performing the task

  • Ss do as appointed to do the task

  • T goes around and gives help if necessary

Step 3: Discussion

- T calls on some Ss to read their notes in front of the class and other SS listen

Step 4: Conclusion

- T asks Ss comments 

Ex 5: Write a paragraph about the sports...

Step 1: Transferring the learning task

-T ask Ss to write a paragraph about the sport they talk about. Allows SS to refer to the listening passages anf other section for useful language for writing

- T tells Ss to write a draft first, based on their ideas they have talked bout in 4.

Step 2: Performing the task

- Ss do the task

+ Ss actually write a paragraph of about 80 – 120 words about the sport/ game they like, covering as many ideas as possible.

Step 3: Discussion

- Ss report to the class

Step 4: Conclusion

- T asks Ss comments and gives the result

+ T may collect some Ss’ writing papers and mark them, then give comments to the class

Write about a sport/game you like. Use your own ideas and the following as cues.

*Sample:

My favorite sport is soccer. It’s an individual or team sport. It may last 90 minutes. There are often two teams and each team has 11 players. This sport needs a ball, a goal. Players often play it in a large field or in a stadium. The refree plays a very important role in this sport. I am fond of football. It’s very entertaining and exciting.

- review the lesson.

- complete the writing (for weak students)

- Prepare Unit 8. Looking back – Project
