UNIT 12: JOBS

Lesson 1 (2 periods)

   

I. OBJECTIVES 

1. Knowledge and skills 

By the end of this lesson, pupils will be able to:

  • Understand and correctly repeat the sentences in two communicative contexts in which pupils ask and answer questions about the job of a family member.
  • Correctly say the phrases and use What does he / she do? – He's / She's _____. to ask and answer questions about jobs.
  • Enhance the correct use of the target structure to ask and answer questions about jobs in a freer context.
  • Listen to and understand four communicative contexts in which pupils ask and answer questions about the jobs of family members.
  • Complete four gapped exchanges with the help of picture cues.
  • Sing the song My lovely family with the correct pronunciation, rhythm and melody.

III. PROCEDURES

1. WARM-UP

a. Objective: To create a fun atmosphere and gently introduce the topic of jobs without overwhelming pupils with new words.

b. Organisation:

- Teacher greets the class.

- Teacher asks the students to watch an AI-generated video designed to support the lesson and answer the questions that appear in the video.

Teacher introduces the game: "Guess the Job (Action Mime)"

- Teacher explains the rules: Teacher will mime (act out) a job without speaking (e.g., driving a tractor, typing on a computer, directing traffic). Pupils raise their hands to guess the job in Vietnamese or English.

- Teacher performs 2-3 simple actions.

   

- Teacher leads into the new lesson: "Today we will learn how to talk about these jobs in English in Unit 12: Jobs - Lesson 1."

Activity 1: Look, listen and repeat.

a. Objective: To understand and correctly repeat the sentences in two communicative contexts (pictures) in which pupils ask and answer questions about the job of a family member.

Activity 2: Listen, point and say.

a. Objective: To correctly say the phrases and use "What does he / she do? – He's / She's ____." to ask and answer questions about jobs.

b. Organisation:

- Ask pupils to look at Pictures a, b, c and d and identify the jobs of the people in the pictures.

- Play the recording from youtube for pupils to listen to and repeat the phrases in chorus and individually until they feel confident. Use the flash cards and interactive digital cards from sachmem.net on the smartboard for a farmer, a policeman, an office worker and an actor to practise the phrases.

- Draw pupils' attention to the speech bubbles and elicit the missing phrase in the answer by pointing at Picture a, then play the recording for pupils to repeat the sentences in both bubbles a few times.

- Repeat Step 3 with Pictures b, c and d, then let pupils practise asking and answering questions in pairs, while going around the classroom to offer help if necessary.

- Invite a few pairs to point at the pictures and ask and answer questions about the jobs of the people in the pictures.

- Teacher moves on to the next content.

Activity 4: Listen and tick or cross.

a. Objective: To listen to and understand four communicative contexts in which pupils ask and answer questions about the jobs of family members.

b. Organisation:

- Draw pupils' attention to the pictures and ask the questions What does he / she do? Elicit the answers from pupils. Tell pupils that they have to look at the people in the pictures, identify their jobs and tick or cross the boxes while listening.

- Play the recording from sachmem.net for pupils to listen, then play it again for them to choose the places the speakers are talking about using a digital classroom response system (e.g., Quizizz or a smart voting tool) and finally play it a third time to check and complete the activity.

   

- Get pupils to swap books with a partner to check their answers before checking as a class. Correct the answers if necessary. 

Extension: If time allows, play the recording, sentence by sentence, for pupils to listen and repeat in chorus. Correct their pronunciation where necessary.

Activity 6: Let's sing.

a. Objective: To sing the song My lovely family with the correct pronunciation, rhythm and melody.

b. Organisation:

- Draw pupils' attention to the title and lyrics of the song. Encourage them to point at the pictures to reinforce their understanding.

- Have pupils read the first verse of the lyrics. Explain that the first verse is about a family's jobs. Have pupils listen to the first verse from sachmem.net, drawing their attention to the pronunciation, rhythm and melody. Then let them listen to and practise singing it line by line while clapping their hands.

- Repeat for the second verse. Explain that it is about the jobs of another family. Check comprehension and give feedback.

- Ask pupils to listen to and sing the whole song while clapping their hands. Go around the classroom and offer help if needed.

- Invite a few groups to the front of the class to sing the song. The class may sing along and clap to reinforce the activity.

a. Objective: To apply the learned language to real life by identifying the jobs of their own family members (linking to the Project preparation in Activity 3).

b. Organisation:

Home Task: "My Family Job Tree"

- Teacher instructs pupils to use a simple digital drawing tool (e.g., MS Paint, Canva for Education) on their home computers/tablets to design “Family Job Tree”. Below the picture, type 2 basic sentences”.

- Example format on the board:

-> This is my mother.

-> She is a [farmer/teacher...].

- Tell pupils if they don't know the English word for a specific job, they can ask their parents or leave it blank to ask the teacher next class.

- Teacher reminds them to bring this to the next class.

* CONSOLIDATION

- Teacher reviews and summarizes the core structure: What does he/she do? - He's/She's a/an...

- Teacher evaluates pupils' participation.

* ADVICE

- Review the 4 job words and the structure.

- Complete the "My Family Job Tree" task.
