UNIT 12: JOBS

Lesson 3 (2 periods)

   

I. OBJECTIVES 

1. Knowledge and skills 

By the end of this lesson, pupils will be able to:

  • Correctly repeat the sounds of the letters ar and ur in isolation, in the words farmer and nurse, and in the sentences My father is a farmer. and My mother is a nurse.
  • Identify the target words farmer and nurse while listening.
  • Say the chant with the correct pronunciation and rhythm.
  • Read and show understanding of a short text about a pupil's family members by filling in the gaps in a table.
  • Complete a gapped text about the jobs and places of work of their own family members.

  • Communication and collaboration: Work in pairs or groups to complete the learning tasks and check answers.

III. PROCEDURES

1. WARM-UP

a. Objective: To spark curiosity, engage tactile learners, and recall basic job vocabulary in a highly interactive and focused way.

b. Organisation:

- Teacher greets the class.

- Teacher asks the students to watch an AI-generated video designed to support the lesson and answer the questions that appear in the video.

Teacher introduces the game: "The Magic Job Box"

- Teacher presents a decorated box and says: "I have a Magic Box today! There are some things inside. Who wants to guess the jobs?"

- Teacher invites 1-2 pupils to the front. The pupil closes their eyes, reaches into the box, and pulls out one simple prop (e.g., a bandage/toy stethoscope, a toy tractor, a piece of chalk).

- The pupil holds up the item. The teacher asks the class: "What job is this?"

- Teacher connects to the smartboard to activate an AI Voice Assistant (e.g., Google Assistant). Teacher asks the AI: "What job uses a toy tractor?" to confirm the pupils' basic answers, introducing AI as a simple, helpful learning tool.

- Teacher praises the class and transitions: "Excellent! Today we will learn more about these words and their sounds in Lesson 3."

   

   

   

   

   

   

- Pupils greet the teacher.

- Students watch the AI-generated video and answer the questions about it.

   

   

   

- Pupils look at the box and listen to the instructions.



 

- Selected pupils come to the front, close their eyes, and pull out a prop.

- Pupils listen to the AI Voice Assistant's response through the speakers and repeat the basic job vocabulary confirmed by the AI.

Activity 2: Listen and circle.

a. Objective: To identify the target words farmer and nurse while listening.

b. Organisation:

- Tell pupils the goal of the activity. Explain that they have to listen to the recording and circle the correct options. Check comprehension.

- Get pupils to read the gapped sentences and guess which option can be chosen to fill in each gap.

- Play the recording from sachmem.net, once or twice, for pupils to listen and circle the correct options. Get pupils to swap books with a partner and check their answers before checking as a class. Play the recording again for pupils to double-check their answers.

- Invite a few pupils to read aloud the completed sentences in front of the class. Correct their pronunciation where necessary.

- Teacher moves on to the next content.

a. Objective: To say the chant with the correct pronunciation and rhythm.

Activity 4: Read and complete.

a. Objective: To read and show understanding of the text by filling in the gaps in the table.

b. Organisation:

- Tell pupils the goal of the activity and explain that they should read the text and fill in the gaps in the table. Check comprehension.

- Do the first gap as an example. First, have pupils read the question What does she do? to focus their attention on the job of the mother. Then have them read the text and choose the appropriate words to fill in the gap (a nurse).

- Set a time limit for pupils to do the task independently. Go around the classroom and offer help if necessary.

- Get pupils to swap their books with a partner and check their answers before checking as a class. Correct the answers where necessary.

- Teacher uses a document camera (visualiser) to project a pupil's completed table onto the smartboard for the whole class to check and compare.

- Extension: Invite one or two pupils to read the text in front of the class. Correct their pronunciation where necessary.

Activity 6: Project

a. Objective: To collect photos or draw pictures of family members at home and present them to the class by using the target language.

b. Organisation:

- Tell pupils the goal of the activity. Explain that they have to show the photos / pictures that they have prepared at home and present them to the class.

- Have pupils work in groups of three. Each pupil shows their photo / picture and tells the group about it, e.g. This is a photo of my family. This is my mother. She’s a nurse. She works at a hospital. This is my father. He’s a farmer. He works on a farm. Go around the classroom and offer help if necessary.

- Invite a few pupils to show their photos / pictures and tell the class about them. Praise pupils when they do the task well.

- Teacher moves on to the next content.

   

   

   

   

   

   

- Pupils listen to the teacher's instructions regarding the presentation.

   

- Pupils work in groups of three to present their prepared photos to their classmates.

4. APPLICATION

a. Objective: To apply the learned sentence structures to talk about their own future aspirations using basic vocabulary.

b. Organisation: 

Activity: "My Dream Job" Mini-Poster (Take-home Task)

- Teacher assigns the task: "When you grow up, what do you want to do?".

- Teacher introduces a safe, basic AI Image Generator (or digital drawing app) (eg., Gemini, AutoDraw,...) on the smartboard. Teacher demonstrates typing simple keywords (e.g., "doctor hospital") to generate a picture (e.g., drawing themselves as a teacher, farmer, or doctor).

- Ask pupils to type 2 basic sentences under their drawing using the target structures:

"I am a [job]."

"I work at a [place]."

- Pupils will bring their mini-posters to the next class and read their two sentences aloud to their partner.

* CONSOLIDATION

- Teacher reviews and summarizes the main points of the lesson (sounds ar/ur, and basic structures for talking about jobs/workplaces).

- Teacher comments on and evaluates pupils' participation.

* ADVICE

- Review the vocabulary and sentence structures learned today.

- Draw and write your "Dream Job" mini-poster at home.
