UNIT 13: APPEARANCE

Lesson 2 (2 periods)

   

I. OBJECTIVES 

1. Knowledge and skills 

By the end of this lesson, pupils will be able to:

  • Understand and correctly repeat the sentences in two communicative contexts focusing on asking and answering questions about someone’s appearance, using the verb to have.
  • Correctly say the phrases and use "What does he / she look like? – He / She has ____." to ask and answer questions about someone’s appearance.
  • Use "What does he / she look like? – He / She has ____." in a freer context.
  • Listen to and understand four communicative contexts in which characters ask and answer questions about someone’s appearance, and number the correct pictures.
  • Complete the target sentence patterns in two exchanges about appearance with the help of picture cues.
  • Review vocabulary about family members and appearance by playing the game Tic-tac-toe.

III. PROCEDURES

1. WARM-UP

a. Objective: To create an engaging atmosphere and introduce the topic of appearance using a visual guessing game ("Guess Who?").

b. Organisation:

- Teacher greets the class.

- Teacher asks the students to watch an AI-generated video designed to support the lesson and answer the questions that appear in the video.

- Teacher sticks 3-4 flashcards of famous cartoon characters (or drawings) reversed on the board.

- Teacher gives simple clues focusing on basic appearance: "This character has big eyes. He has a round face. Who is he?"

- Teacher invites pupils to raise their hands and guess the character.

- Teacher reveals the picture and praises the correct guesses, then leads into the new lesson: "Today we will learn how to ask and answer about what someone looks like."

Activity 1: Look, listen and repeat.

a. Objective: To understand and correctly repeat the sentences in two communicative contexts focusing on asking and answering questions about someone’s appearance, using the verb to have.

Activity 2: Listen, point and say.

a. Objective: To correctly say the phrases and use What does he / she look like? – He / She has _____ , to ask and answer questions about someone’s appearance.

b. Procedure:

- Have pupils point at Picture a, listen to the recording from youtube and repeat the phrase short hair several times. Repeat the same procedure with Pictures b, c and d. Have the class repeat the phrases.

- Point at the question pattern What does he / she look like? Read it aloud and have pupils repeat it. Repeat the same procedure with the answer He / She has _____.

- Point at Picture a and have pupils listen to and repeat after the recording What does she look like? – She has short hair. Repeat the same procedure with Pictures b, c and d.

- Divide the class into two groups to take turns repeating the question and the answer using Picture a until they feel confident. Repeat the same procedure with Pictures b, c and d.

- Have pairs of pupils practice directly from sachmem.net, ask them to complete the drag and drop activity, record the dialogue and listen to their recording for self-review.

a. Objective: To enhance the correct use of What does he / she look like? – He / She has _____ , to ask and answer questions about someone’s appearance in a freer context.

Activity 4: Listen and number.

a. Objective: To listen to and understand four communicative contexts in which characters ask and answer questions about someone’s appearance, and number the correct pictures.

b. Procedure:

- Have pupils look at the pictures. Elicit the questions to ask for appearance of the character in each picture and give feedback.

- Play the recording from sachmem.net of the first exchange. Tell pupils that they will need to listen to a phrase relating to appearance (e.g. short hair, long hair, a round face, big eyes). Ask pupils What does she look like? Help pupils identify the key words in the appearance from the exchange (e.g. a round face). Then ask pupils in which picture a person with a round face appears (Picture d). Tell pupils to write "1" in the box of Picture d.

- Organize the listening task on a digital learning platform for interactive numbering (eg., Wayground,...).

   

- Extension: If there is enough time, play the recording, sentence by sentence, for the class to listen and repeat individually and in chorus. Correct their pronunciation and give feedback.

a. Objective: To complete the target sentence patterns in two exchanges about appearance with the help of picture cues.

Activity 6: Let's play.

a. Objective: To review vocabulary about family members and appearance by playing the game Tic-tac-toe.

b. Procedure:

- Tell pupils that they are going to play the game Tic-tac-toe. Two pupils play at a time. One pupil is X, and the other is O. The pupils take turns choosing a square by saying a word / phrase, making a correct sentence with it and putting their mark in the corresponding square. The first pupil to write three marks in a vertical, horizontal or diagonal line is the winner.

- Invite two pupils to play at a time.

   

   

   

- Change the words and phrases in the grid and let pupils play the game several times if there is enough time.

- Teacher moves on to the next content.

   

   

   

   

   

- Pupils listen to the rules of the game. They observe the 3x3 grid containing vocabulary (short hair, big eyes, long hair, a round face, small eyes, tall, short, slim, big).



 

   

- Two pupils play the game on the board by making sentences (e.g., "My mother has long hair").

- Pupils continue playing in pairs at their desks.

a. Objective: To reinforce basic vocabulary and sentence structures learned in the lesson.

a. Objective: To apply the target language in a real-life communicative context through an interactive dialogue at home.

b. Organisation:

Mission: "Family Guessing Game"

- Teacher assigns a speaking home task: "Tonight, let's play a guessing game with your mom or dad!"

- Teacher explains the rules of the game:

+ Pupil secretly thinks of a family member, a friend, or a famous person.

+ Mom or Dad asks the question: "What does he/she look like?"

+ Pupil answers using the basic words learned today: "He/She has a round face and big eyes."

+ The parent guesses who the person is.

+ Swap roles: The parent describes, and the pupil guesses.

- Teacher models the dialogue quickly with one pupil to make sure everyone understands the task.

   

- Instruct students to record a short video/audio of the guessing game and share it via the class's secure digital platform (e.g., Padlet).

- Teacher reviews and summarizes the main points of the lesson.
